WHAT STYLE OF GAME IS THIS?

The Goblin Ball is a five hour evening Live Action Roleplaying Event in world-class surroundings where players take on the roles of any character you can imagine or have created. There will be the opportunity to explore personal mysteries and strange realities, as well as to have a drink and a dance with friends, strangers, enemies and others.

Combat

This is a non-combat larp.

Any physical violence should only take place within the confines of a formal duel, and only when it is sanctioned and supervised by the refs.

Conflict

Your character may have goals which will  bring them into non-violent conflict with other characters. It is up to you how much or little you wish to engage in this conflict. Confrontation should be clearly directed at the opposing character and not the player’s OOC attributes.

Rules

Rules will be minimal. Your character does not have hit points, damage calls or spell lists. Magical abilities are assumed to be muted due to the dreamlike nature of the realm, but are not gone entirely; please treat these as roleplaying effects rather than imperatives on the recipient, and play to lift.

Transparency vs Secrecy

The events of the game will broadly follow the program laid out by the organisers, which will be made available as an IC document. Individual characters and some non-player characters will have information and motivations known only to themselves.

Scenography

The game uses a fully immersive, WYSIWYG environment without need for GM description.

Active vs Passive GMing

The vast majority of plot will be initiated and pursued by player characters based on interactions and pre-briefing, with minimal GM intervention. There will be little externally driven plot.

Collaborative Play Style

The aim of this game is to tell excellent, immersive stories with high emotional impact. While some characters will have driving goals, we invite you to consider that character failure can lead to excellent stories and enjoyable experiences just as much as victory.

Setting

Our setting is inspired by the film Labyrinth, the works of Brian Froud and traditional faerie myths, and we hope you feel inspired to reflect these in your costumes.

Player Pressure

This game will not put OOC pressure on you as an adjunct to the roleplaying experience.

Player Freedom

You should feel free to roleplay your character, their goal and aims as you choose. However, we explicitly request that you do so in a way that improves the game for everyone else.

  • Bring secrets and plot elements to light rather than hiding them

  • Find ways to include other characters in your roleplaying

  • Find ways to make stories blossom rather than wither.

RULES

This is a freeform game, with the world co-created and supported with the players.  There will be no mechanics associated with social interactions.

CHARACTER GENERATION

Character generation will focus on your character’s motivations, secrets, history, relationships and role within their Court (or lack of it). This will be a collaborative process between you and the GMs, to ensure that your game will focus on the themes and stories you enjoy.

You may play any character, so long as your gameplay does not break one of our social/accessibility expectations.  We will be happy to talk with you about your character options, opportunities, and motivations.
